Nvidia currently holds a leading position in the artificial intelligence (AI) market, with its CUDA software platform considered as a competitive advantage. According to Reuters, Qualcomm, Intel, and Google have formed a new strategic alliance in an attempt to challenge Nvidia's dominant position in the AI market.
With the rise of the AI trend, Nvidia has experienced rapid growth, dominating various applications and market shares, leaving little room for competitors. As a result, these companies have joined forces to compete against Nvidia. Reports indicate that Qualcomm, Google, and Intel have united to seize Nvidia's market share, planning to offer Intel's oneAPI platform as an alternative to Nvidia's CUDA software platform for potential customers.
The companies involved in this alliance are not directly targeting Nvidia's hardware arsenal, but rather focusing on CUDA as the primary objective. They plan to achieve their goals by leveraging the capabilities of Intel's oneAPI platform, believing it to be the only viable alternative to surpass CUDA.
Vinesh Sukumar, AI director at Qualcomm, stated that the company is demonstrating to developers how to migrate from the Nvidia platform. Bill Margo, Google's Director of High-Performance Computing and Chief Technology Expert, believes that an open ecosystem must be established in the field of machine learning to enhance productivity and expand hardware choices.
Therefore, Intel's oneAPI is seen as an excellent choice, providing an interface that allows users to utilize it on various computing accelerator architectures, including GPUs, AI accelerators, and FPGAs. OneAPI is more open than CUDA, supporting a variety of architectures and enabling developers to achieve greater portability when switching between different architectures.
However, oneAPI has not yet reached the optimization levels of CUDA, but the alliance companies plan to rapidly enhance it to achieve similar performance. Looking at the current situation, Nvidia is likely to face intense competition in the AI field, but the company is not slowing down, as evidenced by its continuous introduction of new products at GTC 2024.
